Rohan Rajadhyaksha knows how to take it one gig at a time. The vocalist/keyboardist of Mumbai alt/pop rock band Spud In The Box, who recently performed in Delhi as part of the Gig Week, says, “Ever since Josh [drummer Joshua Singh] joined [in July], we’ve been working on our fulltime set and not had a second to breathe.”
The band, which last played an acoustic show in April at Blue Frog in Mumbai, is retooling their stripped-down, unplugged set for a fundraiser gig at Mumbai restobar, Bonobo, this weekend. Part of a music-and-art program by fundraising venture company The Smile Project, the gig features Spud In The Box playing a 45-minute set and art by Pune design school FAD [Fashion Art Design] Academy. The event will raise funds for Jal Jyoti, an NGO which aims at lighting underprivileged households in Mumbai by fitting bulbs inside bottles to create “bottled lights.”
While Spud has played a few charity gigs in the past [including You For Uttarakhand last month], Rajadhyaksha says The Smile Project fundraiser was in the works for a couple of months. “They [organizers] got in touch with us after Jared [Creado, bassist with Mumbai alt punk band BLEK] gave me their contact,” says the vocalist.
For their acoustic set at Bonobo, Rajadhyaksha says all six members won’t be performing together during the gig, adding, “But we’ll all be there and we might play in different combinations.” The band will play a mellow version of one of their trippier numbers, “Bullet Points.” Says Rajadhyaksha, “It’s completely different acoustic. We try to make it as interesting as possible,” adding that the band recorded an acoustic version of “Bullet Points” last year for the soundtrack to Indo-Czech film All the Lost Souls. “We played an acoustic set at Mocha Mojo in Bandra in August last year and the director, Ahmed Faiyaz, was there and he liked it and said he wanted to use it,” says Rajadhyaksha. In addition, the band is currently working on new material and reworking existing material with drummer Singh. Says Rajadhyaksha, “When there’s a lineup change, you should be able to hear a new sound.”
Spud In The Box plays at Bonobo, Mumbai on September 29th, 2013 as part of The Smile Project’s fundraiser gig for Jal Jyoti. Entry: Rs. 200. Event details here.

That a crowd shows up for a gig in the North Mumbai suburb of Andheri is a big deal. That the crowd showed up despite it being one of the wettest days this monsoon is a feat. Over 200 people made it to the most recent edition of BOMB Thursdays, making it the most attended gig of the fortnightly series as yet. Music enthusiasts had good reason to have not missed the gig – Kolkata post punk band were making their Mumbai debut, Mumbai band Spud In The Box were gigging with their brand new drummer Joshua Singh, The Lightyears Explode, also from Mumbai, promised to bring the house down as always and producer Ayan De’s solo project Paralights was slated to bring the night to a close with some mellow, trippy EDM.
Here’s a look at how the evening unfolded

Meet Spud In The Box’s New Drummer Joshua Singh

The 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist plans to play the ukelele alongside carrying drumming duties with the Mumbai band
Mumbai six-member band Spud In The Box have been in limbo [read busy with exams] since early May when drummer Vivaan Kapoor announced his departure from the two-year-old band. In the meantime, the members have been playing odd gigs as collaborators with artists such as Siddharth Basrur. Last Sunday, they returned to gigging, playing a set at St Gregorios High School’s festival, Odyssey 2013, with their newest recruit, drummer Joshua Singh. The 18-year-old Singh recently returned from Chennai’s Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music after having completed a guitar course. Says guitarist Siddharth Talwar of Singh, when we meet the band at a jam session at Sion’s That Studio, “With the first gig itself [with Singh] we started feeling like a band.”
Singh, who has been focusing on mastering the guitar for the last two years, says that he will continue to practise both the drums and the guitar. Says Singh, “I wouldn’t say I’m a drummer or a guitarist, but I play both so it’s an advantage for me as well as the band. I’ve played the drums for so long that I’m comfortable with the instrument. So when I chose the guitar, it opened me up to a different space of music altogether… like rhythm and harmony fit so well now.  Whenever we take break, I practise my guitar, so I’m still playing both instruments.”
At their upcoming performance at BOMB Thursdays on August 1st, Singh plans to bring his game A to the show. “I’ve already forced them to get me to play guitars on every acoustic set and Ankit (Dayal, vocalist) wants me to play the ukelele [alongwith drums] for the next gig,” says Singh.
Spud in the Box, The Lightyears Explode, Jeepers Creepers and Paralights perform at BOMB Thursdays on August 1st, 2013 at Kino 108, Mumbai. Entry Rs 200. Event details here.
